    Professional Development

Develop as a Professional Dog Trainer

You already know the basics. Now you need to decide what comes next.

Perhaps your training mechanics need sharpening. Perhaps you want to add a new service, explore dog sport or move towards more complex behaviour work. You might simply need another experienced set of eyes on what you are doing.

School of Canine Science offers comprehensive programmes, focused Fusion intensives, practical feedback and ongoing professional development. Choose the route that matches the trainer you are now and the trainer you want to become.

What do you want to develop?

Professional development should solve a real problem. It should not be a random collection of certificates slowly taking over your hard drive.

Choose the area you want to work on:

    Training Skills

    Improve your training skills

Good mechanics make training clearer for the dog and more efficient for the trainer.

These focused courses can help you improve your observation, timing, criteria, reward delivery and ability to build behaviour systematically.

    Shaping

    7-Day Fusion Intensive

Develop cleaner observation, better timing and a more thoughtful approach to building behaviour through reinforcement.

    Beyond the Lure

    7-Day Fusion Intensive

Learn how to create useful behaviour without becoming dependent on guiding the dog with food.

    Crafting Complex Behaviours

    7-Day Fusion Intensive

Improve how you plan, build and maintain advanced behaviours through clearer criteria and better training decisions.

    Practical Lead Skills

    7-Day Fusion Intensive

Develop calm, confident and effective lead-handling mechanics for real training situations.

    Explore Practical Lead Skills

These are focused skill intensives rather than complete professional programmes. Choose the one that addresses the gap in your current training.

    New Services

Add or deepen a professional service

Adding another service can create new opportunities for your clients and your business. The right course depends on whether you want substantial professional education or a shorter introduction to a specialist skill.

    Puppy Lab

    Core professional programme

Puppy Lab is a comprehensive programme covering puppy development, training, socialisation, owner coaching and the systems needed to deliver professional puppy services.

It is taught by Nando Brown and Dean Nicholas and can represent six months to a year of study and practical development for many students.

    Scent for Six

    Six-month specialist programme

Scent for Six provides a structured route into scent work, helping trainers develop deeper knowledge and practical skills over six months.

It is suitable for trainers who want to offer scent-based services rather than simply complete a quick introduction.

    Sport & Performance

    Explore sport and performance training

Dog sport asks for precision, control and training that holds together under greater pressure.

Our sport and performance courses bring in specialist instructors who work at a high level within their disciplines. They are useful for competitors, handlers and professional trainers who want to improve the quality of their training.

    Courses include:

    • IGP heelwork
    • Mondioring obedience
    • Location-specific markers
    • Article indication
    • Odour indication
    • Gundog retrieve
    • Disc dog training

These courses are not limited to people competing at elite level. Many of the training principles can improve observation, mechanics, criteria and problem-solving across everyday professional work.

    Behaviour Work

    Move towards behaviour work

Training skills and behaviour work overlap, but working independently with complex cases requires greater depth.

Short courses can help you develop individual handling or training skills. They do not replace the broader scientific knowledge, consultation ability, risk assessment and professional judgement needed for cases involving aggression, anxiety, resource guarding or separation-related behaviour.

    The Behaviour Bible

The Behaviour Bible is our comprehensive three-year route for trainers who want to progress towards professional canine behaviour work.

It covers the science behind behaviour, professional consultation processes, behaviour modification and complex case areas.

    Explore the Behaviourist Pathway

Relevant supporting courses may include Practical Lead Skills, Confidence Booster and MyCanine360, but the Behaviour Bible remains the core route into deeper behaviour education.

    Personalised Feedback

    Get feedback on your training

    MyCanine360, your training wingman

Knowing what you intended to do and seeing what actually happened are not always the same thing.

MyCanine360 allows you to submit training footage and receive structured feedback on areas including:

    • Timing
    • Training mechanics
    • Reward delivery
    • Handling
    • Criteria
    • Session structure
    • Practical decision-making

It is useful when you know what you are trying to improve but need another experienced set of eyes on your work.

    Ongoing Development

Keep developing after the course ends

    High Performers

Professional development should continue after you finish a course.

High Performers brings together continuing education, scientific updates, practical challenges, business development and a community of trainers and behaviourists who take their work seriously without taking themselves too seriously.

It is designed for professionals who want ongoing support rather than another course sitting unfinished in the corner of their laptop.
